What to Do When a Dishwasher Doesn’t Drain

If a dishwasher is failing to drain there are a number of steps you should take before calling in a repairman.

Step 1

The first thing you should do if your dishwater has drainage issues is to disconnect it, either by turning off the circuit breaker or simply unplugging it. The toe-kick, the panel close to the floor, should also be removed. Keep in mind that between two to four small screws hold the toe-kick in place; you’ll need to remove those first.

Step 2

The next step is to check the filter. The filter will be located either at the back or bottom of the tub, or around the foot of the lower spray arm. While the majority of modern dishwashers come with small grinders, it is still possible that the filter can become jammed by small pieces of food, such as popcorn, or even by paper from labels that may have been washed away from jars.

Step 3

The next step is to get rid of any rubbish that could be clogging up the filter. Clear away any such garbage, and in some situations, it may even be necessary to remove the pair of screws that are holding the filter cage. Then it can be cleaned and checked to make sure there is no debris still inside.

Step 4

The next step is to check out the drainage hose. The drain hose clamp on the dishwater should be loosened and then the hose which can normally be identified by its ridges disconnected from the pump. It is a good idea to try blowing through the hose in order to be certain it is clear.

In the event that there is a blockage in the hose, check for kinks within the hose, and if you find them, straighten them out. The disposer inlet or the pipe that connects the dishwater drain hose under your sink should also be checked, and a small screwdriver used to clear any corrosion.

Step 5

The final step is to look for a valve bracket. The majority of dishwashers should have a drain valve that prevents water from draining back inside the dishwasher. The presence of a valve bracket means that there is a drain valve in your dishwasher. Push on the valve bracket in order to test the valve and ensure it is capable of moving freely.
